Commack High School Varsity Baseball vs Bay Shore

Quite a blowout for the Commack baseball team yesterday.

Lopsided games like this are great for the team but not so much for photos. You get a lot of hitters but not a lot of fielding.

Afternoon baseball photos in bright sunlight on Commack’s field require a lot of post-processing, especially when shooting down the first baseline at the batters. You have the bright sun directly behind them, not to mention the spectators in their lawn chairs and brightly colored clothing. Any players in the shade will pick up a color cast from the field, either green or clay-colored depending on where they’re standing. All these color casts have to be neutralized as best as possible and the strong shadows lightened, especially under their visors. I try to crop in a tightly as possible to minimize the distractions.

Now that the fence is up you can’t move around the field during play; you need to move between innings. Also, you really need to wear a helmet because there’s nowhere to hide anymore.

I only shot two innings of this game (a long two innings) because I needed to get both baseball and a few girls track events for the yearbook folks. Luckily, girls track started at 5:00 so I had a full hour at this game.
