Commack High School Varsity Badminton vs. Huntington

Congratulations to both the boys and girls badminton teams on their win over Huntington.

Badminton is a challenging sport to photograph, not because of the sport itself but because of how the courts are laid out in most gyms. There’s really no room to get out on the floor so you need to shoot from the bleachers. Getting the courts on the opposite side of the gym is difficult because of both the distance and the other players/nets/scorers in the way. This presents an interesting dilemma - do you use a really long lens and only get a maximum aperture of f/5.6 or go for a shorter prime with a wider aperture but not as much reach. Since the long lens would put my ISO setting up in the stratosphere I opted for a 135mm prime. This gets me a wide f/2.0 aperture and a relatively low ISO. Since my Sony a1 has a 50MP sensor I can punch in using crop mode and effectively make the 135mm close to a 200mm. Problem solved.

A word of warning - this is a big gallery and if you’re looking for your photos they could be anywhere; the photos are ordered by time, not by athlete.
