Commack High School Boys Varsity Basketball vs. Northport

Well! This was a game. Lots of defensive play on both sides and Commack pulled it out at the end.

I was looking forward to shooting this game, especially for the crowd. When the stands are packed I’m taking every opportunity to use the crowd as my background, and occasionally, as my subject. That’s why my 20mm got lens plenty of use in this game. It’s not often that you get a full house to shoot into and I’m making the most of it.

The one tip I can give you for using the crowd as a background is to think carefully about using face/eye subject detection if your camera has this feature. If you’re really good at focusing and can put your focus spot on the player it will work great but if you’re slightly off you risk auto-focusing on a face in the crowd and blurring your subject. Different cameras have different autofocus systems so you need to determine whether yours will work well in this type of situation.
